Bulgaria issued over 36,000 work permits to foreign workers in 2024, marking a 10,000 increase from 2023.

In 2024, Bulgaria granted over 36,000 work permits, marking an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year. The permits were issued primarily to nationals from non-EU countries, who are required to apply through the National Employment Agency before starting work in Bulgaria. EU and Swiss citizens are exempt from work permit requirements but must register with the local Employment Office.

Top Beneficiaries of Bulgarian Work Permits in 2024

Recent data revealed that the majority of work permits were granted to nationals from the following countries:
Ti rkiye: 8,000
Uzbekistan: About 8,000
Kyrgyzstan: About 5,000
Nepal: 4,500
Moldova: 1,300
Most of these workers received combined residence and work permits, with seasonal employment as the secondary route for foreign nationals. Over 13,400 Seasonal Workers Registered in 2024.

According to Atanaska Todorova, Chief Expert in “Labor Market, Migration, and Mobility,” 13,435 seasonal workers were registered in 2024—a decline of 2,000 compared to 2023. Among seasonal workers, Turkish nationals made up the largest group, with more than 4,200 registered.
Only 800 internationals received an EU Blue Card in 2024, well below employer expectations. The EU Blue Card allows highly skilled foreign professionals to live and work in Bulgaria for a specific employer, but the demand for highly skilled workers remains unmet.

Employers Seek Over 260,000 Workers in Bulgaria

A study by the Employment Agency found that employers in Bulgaria are seeking 262,000 workers across various industries. Despite the need for highly qualified professionals, many companies continue to hire low-skilled foreign workers, including those without secondary education.
Todorova noted that over 40% of foreign workers leave Bulgaria within three months of employment, often moving to Western European countries in search of better opportunities.

Key Takeaways

According to an HR specialist, Bulgaria needs up to 300,000 foreign workers.

The number of foreign workers in Bulgaria is surging, with 35,000 to 40,000 workers expected to be employed this year.

Bulgaria has reported 11 shortage occupations concerning several sectors such as transportation, healthcare, and food service.

The Bulgarian labour market is facing a shortage of workers ranging from 250,000 to 300,000, as asserted by the human resources expert Georgi Parvanov.

Among these, 70,000 are attributed to the lack of seasonal workers, Schengen.News reports.

Parvanov, who is a member of the executive committee of the Confederation of Employment, suggested that Bulgaria should establish quotas for hiring workers from third countries.

He further emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced foreign workforce from different countries. Parvanov, as cited by the Nouvelles du Monde, said that Bulgaria should avoid overfilling with foreign workers from a specific country.

However, he suggests that Bulgaria must ensure it has explored all its local labour resources before bringing workers from third countries.

Bulgaria to Employ Up to 40,000 People This Year

Reportedly, with a three-year visa program for manufacturing companies across different sectors, it is anticipated that 35,000 to 40,000 workers will be employed this year to meet company demand.

Our embassies abroad are not prepared for this influx of foreign workers. We will probably import around 35-40,000 people this year. Last year, there were much fewer, and five to six years ago, we imported 5,000 to 6,000 people per year.
– Georgi Parvanov, Confederation of Employment

Regarding the foreign workforce, Parvanov said that individuals from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan easily integrate into Bulgarian society. However, he said that Bulgaria has seen a notable interest from workers from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, among others.

Salaries of Third Country Workers Range from €500 to €700

As further revealed by Parvanov, foreign workers from third countries receive a salary ranging from €500 to €700.

“These people come from countries where the average salary is 200 to 300 dollars gross. Their goal is to send 100 to 150 to 200 euros to their families without having an idea of the price level and standard of living.” – Georgi Parvanov, Confederation of Employment

11 Occupations Facing Shortages in Bulgaria

A recent report by the European Labour Authority identified 11 shortages and six surpluses in the Bulgarian labour market. Professions facing shortages are as follows:

Heavy truck and lorry drivers

Sewing machine operators

Welders and flame cutters

Gardeners, horticultural and nursery growers

Waiters

Chefs

Accountants

Secondary education teachers

Nursing professionals

Specialist medical practitioners

Electrical engineers

On the other hand, surplus professions in Bulgaria include vegetable and related preservers, building frame and related trades workers not elsewhere classified, shop sales assistants, social work associate professionals, administrative and executive secretaries, and psychologists.

Are you a young professional in search of new opportunities, competitive salaries and high quality of life in one of the most dynamic and liberal countries in the world? How about free healthcare, job satisfaction and attractive work benefits? If you’ve checked all these boxes then we’ve got one more box for you. Say yes to live and work in Canada in 2024.

With over 200,000 jobs currently available in Canada, we’ve narrowed down the top 20 occupations currently in-demand across the country. Occupations currently topping the list are those in medical professions such as registered nurses, IT professionals, including software engineers and designers, trade skill occupations such as industrial electricians and welders, as well as those in the transportation and logistics sector (long haul truck drivers) and the travel and hospitality industry.

There are various ways to relocate to Canada, especially if your occupation is in-demand. Perhaps the most popular, quickest and easiest way to immigrate to Canada is through the Express Entry system, which is targeted at young highly skilled professionals who want to live and work in Canada.

Another popular way to get to Canada is through one of 11 Provincial Nominee programs. This is particularly aimed at individuals who have occupations that are in-demand, allowing you to apply to a specific province where your occupation is needed. This automatically increases your chances of receiving an ITA (Invitation to Apply) for permanent residency in Canada.

Although these are the most popular ways to immigrate to Canada, there are over 70 different immigration programs and visas available, each specialised to assist foreigners to start a new life in Canada. Although the government has done its utmost to make the process more accessible and easy, the process can be quite complicated when trying to choose the right program that will maximise your chances of success as well ensuring that all forms are completed correctly and submitted along with all the relevant supporting documents.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s have a look at the top 20 jobs currently needed in Canada and how we can help you get there.

Top 20 Occupations In-Demand in Canada in 2021

Canada is currently facing a shortage of skilled and semi-skilled workers. This is because Canadian citizens are retiring earlier and young professionals are either being promoted or moving to urban hubs, leaving vacancies that are unable to be filled by local talent.

The Canadian government has therefore devised an immigration strategy to help fill the labour gap, aiming to invite 1 million newcomers to the country by 2021. Immigration programs and systems have been introduced to help fast-track the visa application process and have since been highly successful. Canada aims to invite 341,000 skilled workers in 2020, and if your occupation happens to fall on the list of in-demand occupations below, your chances of being accepted have just increased immensely!

Top 20 Occupations In-Demand in Canada for 2020

Occupation

Average Annual Salary(CAD)

Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse

$76,342 – $129,781

Long Haul Truck Driver

$44,850 – $75,770

Welder

$40,938 – $69,595

Industrial Electrician

$49,334 – $81,491

Aerospace engineer

$89,700 – $152,490

Software Engineer

$92,450 – $157,165

College or Vocational Instructor

$47,736 – $75,408

Psychologist

$97,451 – $130,932

Aircraft Pilot

$66110 – $112,387

Early Childhood Educator

$33,150 – $45,884

Chef or Cook

$25,350 – $59,670

Farm Worker

$22,620 – $35,687

Pipefitter

$63,239 – $87,828

Pharmacist

$76,342 – $129,781

Construction Estimator

$57,504 – $97,757

Business Management Consultant

$77,875 -$132,388

Best Ways to Immigrate to Canada in 2020

There are various ways to immigrate to Canada if your job is in-demand, but perhaps the top 2 ways are the Express Entry system and the Provincial Nominee Program.

1. The Express Entry system

The Express Entry system is aimed at highly skilled foreign workers who want to live and work in Canada. It is a points-based system that manages 3 immigration programs (The Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canada Experience Class). To apply through the Express Entry system you will need to create an online profile containing information about your age, education, work experience, language abilities and adaptability. The great thing about the Express Entry system is that you do not need a job offer, can work anywhere in Canada and the process takes less than 6 months!

The Provincial Nominee Program

Canada has 11 Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Each Province or territory has specific labour needs and therefore will have different occupations that are in demand as well as different criteria that need to be met. These programs are aimed at skilled and semi-skilled workers who want to live and work in Canada. To apply through a PNP, you will need a valid job offer in Canada. In order to get a provincial nomination, which is worth 600 points, you will need to submit an expression of interest to the province or territory of your choice and, if successful, will be notified by the province and be invited to apply for permanent residence to live and work in Canada.

We Help Make The Application Process Easy

With all of these lucrative employment opportunities and 70+ immigration programs and visa options to choose from, the process can become quite overwhelming and confusing. But it doesn’t have to be. By using our accredited Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) you will not only improve your chances of success in the visa application process, but you will get expert advice on which program is best for your specific needs. Our RCICs are highly qualified and are granted permission by the ICCRC to assist you with your eligibility evaluation, review all your documents and application forms and submit them to the Canadian government for you.
